AbstractA methodology for monitoring night-time supercooled liquid water clouds and ice clouds, using GOES-8 multispectral imagery is discussed. According to this technique, high level clouds are identified by subtracting the 3.9 mm brightness temperature channel from the corresponding 10.7 mm channel. The satellite imagery for July 9 th1997 (23:45 UTC) and June 1th 1998 (03:39 UTC) period were used to test the method for the south and southeast regions of Brazil.
